($45) The rieslings from both Klaus and Achleiten were botrytis-free this year and fermented to within a gram or two of absolute dryness. Peach and pear aromas are laced with peach pit and apple pip bitterness. In the mouth there is a real rush of baked and dried peach fruit drenched in honey, and only in the long, rich finish does one also appreciate how intensely meaty and stony-minerally this wine is. Like all of the best Klaus rieslings, this is formidably concentrated and structured, majestic in flavor, and apt to have opened up even more by the end of 2001. 2 stars.
