World Class
01/02/2006

I opened a bottle of the 2001 to share with my brother-in-law, I decanted 30 minutes before serving and the wine lived up to our expectations. It was full bodied with a nose that excited the senses. Chilean wines have reached world class with this wine.

I would rate this a 4.5. I had the 2001 which I should have decanded for about an hour. It opened up nicely in the glass. The mouthfeel went from velvety to chunks of fruit. It gained complexity and power as it aired. I would rate the initial opening a 4 and by the end a 4.75. It was a very unique, fruity, classy wine.
Disappointed with the 2004

Casa Lapostolle's "Clos Apalta" is one of those wines I try every year because of its consistent quality-to-price ratio. But the 2004 was disappointing, not as round as the 2003 and certainly not as good as the 2000. I don't agree with Wine Spectator's 93 rating for this vintage.

About Chile

Virtually every wine region in Chile benefits from proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the cooling Humboldt Current that flows up from the South Pole. Although Chile extends more than 2,000 miles from north to south, its grape-growing regions are clustered in the center of the country, where rainfall is concentrated during the winter months, and where an absence of fungal diseases makes for relatively carefree grape-farming.
