Just what i was looking for!
Picked up a 2006 and opened it yesterday, chilled it and served it a bit colder then recommended but what a beautiful nose on this wine. Let it warm up and sit for 10 min and it opened up very nice, i got some strawberry/blackberry and nice tannin. This is a perfect sipping wine by itself or would do great with fillet. A great find at Total wine $7.99 talk about good QPR. Getting a case today for the cellar. CHEERS!
2006 Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet
I was prepared to be disappointed because of the subdued nose but upon tasting I was very pleasantly surprised by a medium to full bodied palate consisting of dark fruits (blackberry with some blueberry and cranberry) accompanied by ample tannins that match the intensity of the fruit. After a while the flavors intensified further even though the nose remained subdued. Let it breathe for an hour and the tannin/fruit relationship develops further to achieve a longer finish. This indicates that this youthful beauty should develop into a near thoroughbred with three to five years of cellaring.
Try it with manchego cheese. Wow!
My rating at its current stage: 91
My prediction in 3-5 years: 92 or higher
This is an amazing bargain. You can easily spend $15-$20 on a wine this good and with this much potential. I'm buying a case to drink during the next year and one to cellar.
Very smooth, price not indicitive of quality.
Perhaps the best bottle that can be purchased under $10. Smooth and easy to drink. My wife and I enjoy this with prime rib and horseradish. Always a staple in our home.
an any day, any time favorite
My fiance and I don't often agree on wine: he likes sweet whites, I like dry reds, etc... but this is one we both enjoy on a regular basis. We have given it to friends as gifts for different reasons and they have all enjoyed it enough to go buy more of their own. Its a great inexpensive wine.
Good - not great
It's our every-day wine. It's over $12 at Publix, but $6.39 by the case at Total Wine(although I just noticed the price increased by $.80) Still an amazing value for such a quality wine.
Powerful and Inexpensive
A good introduction to the Penfolds house style, a powerful fruit and oak bomb with heavy black fruit and oak predominating. Can be a bit too intense at first opening for some drinkers. I recommend decanting or letting the wine sit open for an hour or so to let the flavors and aromas unpack. If you want to try a fruiter, more accessible Shiraz-Cab, try the Penfolds Rawson's Retreat or even Yellow Tail. 86 points.
Penfolds Wines Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet South Australia
Great taste for the price.
I liked it - complex, a bit tart - Michele found too tart
Great taste, great value
This wine was recommended by a waitress at the Olive Garden where we had tried the more expensive Penfolds Thomas Hyland Shiraz. We gave it a try and it is now one of our favorites.
Good value - memorable taste
If I rated on the basis of value, this would merit four stars. Very good wine, especially if you choose it for everyday drinking.
One of my favorite reds that has great value.
I served a bottle of this wine with a pastitio and was pleasantly surprised how it drew all the flavors together making for an excellent compliment to the meal. An wonderful all around wine for beginning wine drinkers and seasoned ones as well!
Love Austrailian Wines
Really enjoyed. Will purchase again along with other Penfolds varieties even the expensive Grange.
I think this might be the best sub $10 bottle i've had. I really think it's very drinkable, and just a good QPR. I've got their Bin 389 which is much more expensive but i've yet to open it up yet. the Koonunga hill gets a thumbs up in my book.
I would rate this more of a 4.25. This is a well balanced, fruit forward wine, with hints of mocha. The 2000 vintage had a higher % of Shiraz and a lower alcohol % than the 2001. I assume that is why the 2001 doesn't quite achieve the smoothness and is not as fruit forward as the 2000. I'm hoping cellaring the 2001 for a year could bring out the superb qualities of the 2000. I would say that the 2000 is as good or better than most of red wines I've tried at ANY price. For the money - and sheer enjoyment - you'd be hard pressed to find a better wine.
not sure, tasted a little odd. Have second bottle to try
