About Ravenswood Winery

Ravenswood Winery has humble origins, beginning in 1976. This was the year Joel Peterson harvested his first crop of Zinfandel. Not from his own vines, however, Joel consistently sourced grapes from vineyards in Sonoma County and Napa Valley. At first it wasn’t by choice, he simply couldn’t afford to buy land. Now, steadfast relationships have delivered a successful formula. As the old saying goes…if it ain’t broke…

This wine is unbelievably delicious and inexpensive. A true FIND!
Awesome Zin

This is a BIG and Fruity Zin. It has a full body without the edge ( big spice). It has mellowed since it has been in oak for longer than most, but does not have a strong oak taste. The fruit prevails here and the finish is long and smooth. Ravenswood hit a Grand Slam with this one. I am a big fan of Ravenswood since the consistently have great wines.
Just delicious, with some complexity

This wine defines great Zin for my wife and I - and appears to be consistent from year to year. Big brambly berry nose (blackberries and raspberries), lush and deep fruit on the palate, smooth, just enough tannin to prevent it from being too soft. Great depth, very highly recommended, and well priced.
Really nice

This is the exact wine that turned me on to reds in the first place. Perfect amount of tannins and very well balanced. Great!
What good Zin is all about

Wow. This is really good wine. It’s been awhile since I’ve popped a bottle of zin. I had it with Grilled pork Al pastor with pineapple and Indian fry bread. I thought I’d give a red a try with the spicy stuff. Usually I go with a white but this was soo good. Try it with Mexican food.
Marvelous Zinfandel!

My label says Ravenswood 2005 Sonoma County Old Vine Zinfandel. What an absolutely wonderful zin. We loved every moment of it. Heady and well-balanced. We want more.

Very good Zin Value

Having seen the good reviews on this Zinfandel I decided to give it a try. No regrets. I won't get into the wine speak but I will say that this Zin is fruity, elegant, and with enough complexity to please the purist. It has a tight fruit concentration that it is bound to please the casual wine drinker, and it should pair well with Italian food, Pot Roast, and BBQ. Drinking it alone is also not a bad idea. Let it open up by decanting or giving it some time in the glass before drinking. At this price it is a winner.

One of the better inexpensive zins from Ravenswood, and a very big Zin for the $$... Cheers! ;^)
A Great Big Zin for Everyday

It's no secret anymore. Ravenswood Sonoma County Zin is one heck of a value. Should be on very table for those who love a great big hearty zin that is full of blackberries and a hint of raspberry. Not overly fruity but just enough that you won't be disappointed. Nice amount of dryness with no oak taste. Just the right amount of spice. A solid everyday zin that derserves its position at the top of the middle ranking.

Excellent zinfandel. It is a bit "chewy" with excellent pepper/spice notes characteristic of a good zif. It is not the smoothest wine, but it is very bold and flavorful.

Mediocre, bland. Won't buy it again.

About California

It is remarkable that an industry essentially less than a half-century old could capture the attention of the American wine-buying public to the degree that California has. Powerful consumer interest in California wine is driven by two major factors. The more obvious reason is that California's best wines, which come from grapes grown in...

Zinfandel

Zinfandel is not the rage it was in the 1980s and early 1990s, as there are now too many wines made from overripe fruit or from young vines, or overwhelmed by excessive use of new barrels. Today's Zin styles range from elegant, taut, and claret-like midweights to superripe and potty behemoths, with off-the-charts...
