Medium ruby. Superripe aromas verging on roasted: bitter cherry, dark chocolate and sandalwood. Dense and very ripe, with slightly cooked berry flavors complicated by chocolate, coffee and licorice. Deep, powerful wine, finishing with dusty tannins that reach the front teeth. But doesn't offer the freshness of the '99 bottling.
