($29; 85% grenache) Red-ruby, a bit less saturated than the Gigondas. Highly nuanced, liqueur-like nose combines roasted red and blue fruits, spices and coffee. Rich, fat and seamless, with near-exotic ripeness. With even more buffering extract, this seems less alcoholic than the Gigondas, despite being a half-degree higher, at 14.9%. Horizontal tannins really spread out over the palate. Philippe Guigal compared this wine in style to the house's 1990.

PERFECT BALANCE

CRYSTAL RUBY RED COLOR. BRIARY RED CHERRY LACED WITH SWEET VANILLA OAK AND SMOKEY KIR LIQUEUR NOSE. FAT, VELVETY, AND LUSH ON THE PALATE SHOWING FLAVORS OF BLACK AND RED BING CHERRY, WET STONE AND MINERALS. GREAT PURITY OF FRUIT, SWEET AND RICH WHILE HAVING A FINE BALANCE OF ACID AND TANNINS. FINISHES LONG WITH WAVES OF FLAVOR. NEEDS A FEW HOURS OF AIR TO OPEN UP THE FLAVOR PROFILE. I WOULD LAY THIS DOWN FOR AT LEAST 5 YEARS THOUGH IT DRINKS BEAUTIFULLY NOW. 90-93+

Open this bottle and let it sit for a few hours and the flavors begin to reveal themselves. A wonderful drink from start to finish
Great wine

A very fine, complex wine I've found to be much better in the accompaniment of food than by itself. Great addition to any cellar.

The prices are going up on the '01, given what the '00 is selling for it is the bargain of the century in C du P. Fantastic wine, not as fruit forward as the '99, but much more balanced.
