The BEST wine I have ever savored.....
by Rhone772774
My wife and I had been married 2 years when my boss gave us airfare for two to anywhere in the US. We went to Ventana Inn in Big Sur. Across the road they were building a new resort called Post Ranch Inn. We had dinner there, and the very first wine that caught my eye was a 1985 Gaja Barberesco Sori Tilden. I had just read the write-up on that very wine about a month earlier by Jancis Robinson. She simply called it magical. Being young and basically no money, my wife saying "Go ahead! You have to; it was meant to be..." Thank God for wise women. I can literally still taste that wine.... I remember tasting hazelnut touches, and an almost creamy mouthfeel. It was early in my wine education timeline, but it remains with me even now. Young and still big in 1991, it was obviously something different than anything I had experienced thus far. I had a bison ribeye with it, and it was amazing. A hint of fruit and nuts, and then you sensed the tannins more than you felt it. Both of us remember that bottle being the catalyst that started our collection now. What an introduction to world class wine; we both had tears in our eyes, and a big bill for that trip that we finally paid off! One of the happiest moments of my life. Jancis, it WAS magical....

The provinces of Vercelli and Novarra in the northern reaches of the Piedmont area are home to wines like Carema, Ghemme, and Gattinara. The latter two wines are mostly Nebbiolo, which as traditionally been blended with...
