About Havens Wine Cellars

Prior to selling his winery, Michael Havens made Merlot in a distinctly Bordeaux style, with a restrained sweetness and notes of lead pencil, minerals, game and tobacco leaf. He was also a pioneer of California Syrah in a distinctly northern Rhône style, typically showing notes of dark fruits, black pepper and gunflint.

87(+?) Points | Stephen Tanzer's IWC - May/June 2002

(bottled two weeks prior to my visit) Expressive aromas of green apple, pear and minerals, along with more exotic notes of banana and papaya. Juicy, minerally and very dry, with a bracing, almost metallic flavor of grapefruit pith. Quite firm in acidity, as this wine did not go through malolactic fermentation. Just short of hard but shows more flavor interest than the 2000 bottling. I'd try this bottle in a year or so.
