90 Points | Stephen Tanzer's IWC - July/August 2003

($45) Good medium ruby. Explosive aromas of black cherry, roasted tomato, olive, game and nutty oak. Sweet, lush and gamey; a bit less densely packed than the young 2001 but still stuffed with fruit. Shows a syrah-like animal aspect.

Disappointment
01/21/2007
by Corona11266705
I am surprised that Tanzer rated this wine a 90 back in June of 2003. I had this wine last night (1/21/07) and it was way too young and personally I did not really see much room for improvement with aging. I had high expectations for Pingus' second wine, but it just did not do it for me. Maybe the wine was going through a bad period, but based on yesterday's tasting I would rate this wine 85 pts.

The grape's name translates to "little early one," a moniker that references fruit's early ripening tendency-- Tempranillo thrives even with a short growing season. The varietal is at its best in...
