2001 Gravner Ribolla Gialla Anfora Venezia Giulia

One of Italy's most important winemakers, Josko Gravner  is also one of the most inventive.  He makes use of a technique that dates back to Georgia (the former Soviet Republic) 4,000 years ago. He allows his wines to macerate on the grape skins for several months in large terracotta amphorae before transferring them to oak casks for two years or more of further aging. Gravner's idiosyncratic white wines are almost like reds in their chewy texture (he also makes red wines from Cabernet and Merlot). The Breg is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Riesling Italico.
