About Chateau Petrus
Yes, it's legendary and extravagantly priced. But this wine, from a prime vineyard on well-drained clay soil atop the Pomerol plateau, has for decades stood as the greatest example of Merlot in the world. Chateau Petrus makes a wine that is extraordinarily creamy and thick but wit... more

The bottle in the blind flight appeared to have a healthy cork but was disappointing, with aromas of mocha and menthol; a penetrating middle palate with good but not outstanding richness; hints of herbs and mushroom; and substantial, slightly drying tannins. The second bottle was better but still not up to the reputation of this vintage: Full medium-deep red. Very sweet, almost syrupy nose of cherry, chocolate and roast coffee. Fat and silky but with its fruit element rather suppressed. Hugely tannic, even a bit dry, on the end. Based on this event, and two or three earlier samples of this wine, it hard to avoid the conclusion that this is a very good but hardly stellar vintage for Petrus.

Petrus, 1982- Pomerol, France- The color was dark ruby purple. The first nose was closed, neutral and earthy, on the palate, this wine was HUGE! Still very young, needs another 10-15 years of cellaring. This wine started opening up after about 30 minutes in the glass, the first nose was concentrated with currants, raisins and plums aromas, on the palate this wine was like a Cabernet with complex, multidimensional, concentrated and focused flavors, however, later on it began to taste more like a Merlot with sweet taste and lots of ripe red fruits flavors. An outstanding wine! We enjoyed this fabulous and extraordinary wine with Rack of Lamb. May 2000.
