About Paloma Vineyard

Jim and Barbara Richards began crafting superb Napa Valley Merlot in 1983. Although Jim has since passed, the Richards still have a rabid following among those who prize sweetness of fruit, creamy texture and plenty of spicy oak. Sheldon, Jim’s son, now works alongside his mom in the vines and in the cellar, carrying on the work, and good reputation of his dad’s vineyard.

($45) Deep ruby-red. Captivating nose combines black fruits, violet, brown spices, chocolate and earth. Sweet and creamy but not heavy; a near-confectionery, milk-chocolatey wine with a texture like liquid silk. Finishes sweet and lush, with very ripe tannins and a whiplash of dark berries and milk chocolate. Very sexy merlot.

Best Merlot I've had

by Craig11667868
I picked up the last case of this almost 2 years ago at a wine outlet. I heard great things about the wine but did not have my first taste until 2 weeks ago. Just wonderful! Silky smooth and wonderfully fruity. Needless to say I am out of this great wine and have been searching for more. You will not be disappointed

One of the best American Merlots I've ever tasted...lush and smooth with a touch of spice...nearly perfect.
Ymmm--deserves the Wine Spectator rating

I don't drink a lot of Merlot. This is the exception. Layers and layer of fruit peel away to reveal a deep core of flavor and a silky long finish. Just great. (The Wine Spectator rating was 95 pts!)

From Mount St. Helena to the city of Napa, the valley is defined by two north-south ridgelines of the Coast Range Mountains.

Varietal Image
Merlot

Merlot enjoyed a surge in popularity in the 1990s as consumers suddenly discovered that they could enjoy aromas and flavors similar to those of Cabernet in a fleshier, softer wine with smoother tannins. A wave of Merlot plantings followed, frequently in soils and microclimates completely inappropriate for this variety, and the market was soon...
