About Bodegas Castano
Castano, a large co-operative in Yecla, is a source of some stunning values, mostly based on Monastrell (known outside of Spain as Mourvèdre.) This grape is especially well-suited to the Yecla appellation, as it's able to handle, and even benefits from the long, hot summers and pe... more

I prefer big, bold wines and this delivers. It's also very spicy which you're either going to love or hate.

Usually a white wine drinker and starting to get into the reds. I thought this was a light and fruitful wine good for an everyday.

Displays nice darker berry fruits on the nose and palate (esp. after the second sip) and has smooth yet very subtle tannins and the finish is adequately long. There is an earthy quality (clay?) to it as well that may not thrill many typical American palates. It went very well with a good old fashioned beef stew with onions and carrots and I really enjoyed the last few sips with a chocolate dessert. Well worth the price and I will buy a few more bottles.

I really have an affinity for this wine. Although I'm still the novice, I know what I like and I have been developing a more serious palate over the last three years, especially with the "value" wines under the $15 mark. I have brought several of my merlot buddies and cab friends into the Monastrell fold. You can pair it with your fav dish or serve it as a great stand alone. I find it has an aromatic zeal about it, possesses a dark, lush, rich colour, offers up some intense fruit, with just enough acid to tease the palate before finishing long and smooth. If there are better selections in this price range... I've got to know!!

Just ok, light but a little "vinegery", probably will pass the next time (DB).

This wine was ok, but nothing to write home about. It was medium-full bodied with lots of fruit. I really did not taste any hints of chocolate! WTC (Wine Tasters Club) rated this 2.0-2.5 stars. I won't buy again.

I don't consider myself to be a wine snob by any means (I always go for wines in this price range) and this has to be the worst I've ever tasted.
