($260) Fuller yellow color. Reserved, brooding aromas of apple, iodine and menthol; I might have picked this as Le Montrachet. Large-scaled, rich and mouthfilling, with deep flavors of apple, spices and stone. Offers superb volume (the alcohol is nearly 15%) but comes across today as uncompromisingly dry. Quite unevolved, but very long and stony on the aftertaste. This very rich, slow-mounting grand cru should benefit from six to eight years of cellaring. Jean-Marie Guffens has compared this wine from the outset to the outstanding 1992 version. (Fruit of the Vine, New York, NY; also a Peter Vezan selection; importers include The Stacole Company, Boca Raton, FL; North Berkeley Wines, Berkeley, CA; and Ideal Wines, Medford, MA)

While the origins of the grape were disputed for many years, with some speculating that the grape came all the way from the Middle East, DNA researchers at the University of California-Davis proved in 1999 that Chardonnay actually developed...
