About Kistler Vineyards

Steve Kistler's rich, Burgundy-style Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, from a series of ideally situated vineyards all around Sonoma County, have long been favorites among collectors and restaurant clients. The best bottlings have proven to be excellent mid-term agers and are among the richest and most complex Chardonnays made anywhere—the key is low-tech, hands-off winemaking that makes the most of the particular vineyard site plus what each vintage has to offer.

($65) Medium yellow-green. Complex nose melds lime, pineapple, crushed stone and menthol. Smooth, fresh and fruity, with a captivating sugar/acid balance and terrific snap. Very young and densely packed chardonnay, with complex notes of apricot, citrus zest and nut oil. Offers terrific life in the mouth. This has the structure of a top white Burgundy. Like the Hudson bottling, this wine may ultimately merit an even higher score. "Both Hyde and Hudson are a little less dramatic in their youth in 2003 than in 2002, which is a good thing," notes Kistler.

About California

Powerful consumer interest in California wine is driven by two major factors. The more obvious reason is that California's best wines, which come from grapes grown in...

Chardonnay

The best Chardonnays in the world continue to arrive from the region where the grape first emerged: the chalk, clay, and limestone vineyards of Burgundy and Chablis. While the origins of the grape were disputed for many years, with some speculating that the grape came all the way from the Middle East, DNA researchers at the University of California-Davis proved in 1999 that Chardonnay actually developed...
