76% Zinfandel; 24% Mixed Black. As usual, the Old Hill Ranch bottling stands out in the midst of the Ravenswood brood as its slightly stony, minerally notes give it an unmistakable cast. This particular version is fairly complex, if not quite fully fruity, and its flavors of dried berries, oak and black soil are underscored by a familiar bit of puckery tannins. It is not in least way surprising that this one will do with a bit of age, and we recommend five years in the cellar.
Good bright ruby-red. Aromas of black raspberry, mocha, tar, brown spices, menthol and black licorice; rather claret-like. Dense and thick on entry, then extremely primary and closed in the middle, but already showing lovely spicy lift and inner-mouth perfume. An infant of a zinfandel, with the strong acidity and substantial ripe tannins to ensure a slow evolution in bottle. This will grow spicier over the years. The grenache in this vineyard was thoroughly ripe in 2003, and comprises an unusually high 5% of the blend.
