Pinot Noir grown within the Meursault commune adjacent to Volnay becomes wine called Volnay-Santenots. Here limestone and red oolite form a unique soil combination that gives birth to wines of finesse and breed, capable of long aging as they are supported by fresh acidity and spice. Ampeau's Volnay Santenots, typically so fresh and unspoiled with their fragrant, supple red berry fruit, retain a certain youthful character throughout their development. Even though the vintage was quite difficult, or even disastrous, for most producers, in 1993 Robert and Michel Ampeau made this very elegant Pinot Noir which drinks beautifully now, but is still a candidate for further bottle-aging.

I am overwhelmed. See Fulton's note. Best I have had in years.

This wine isnt about simple charm or likeability. Its a challenging wine, that presented a different experience every few minutes. Its flavors and aromas ranged from the expected, like red cherry, to the unexpected, like manure, and everything in between. This wine has a wonderful minerality and earthiness, which became more and more prominent as the wine sat in the glass and the fruit faded. This wine has a certain finesse, elegance, and refinement. Its a very classy wine, and was a pleasure to drink.
Gone, Gone, Gone

I've enjoyed Ampeau's wine for 20+ years now, and this was a huge disappointment. The bottle was completely gone, not the hint of any fruit. We re-tried the bottle over the course of a couple of hours hoping it might bloom, but it simply got worse. This is an expensive bottle to be avoided.
