($60) Dark red. Fresh red and dark berry scents are given depth by tobacco, anise and garrigue, but there's nothing roasted about this. Fresh cherry and blackcurrant on the palate; picks up dusty tannins with air but not at the expense of sweetness. This has superb persistence. Becker told me that the key to maintaining freshness in 2003 was getting the grapes into the cellar as quickly as possible after picking ("less than an hour for us") and harvesting between 8:00 ("so that morning dew had evaporated") and 3:00 ("before it got really hot").
