About Havens Wine Cellars

Prior to selling his winery, Michael Havens made Merlot in a distinctly Bordeaux style, with a restrained sweetness and notes of lead pencil, minerals, game and tobacco leaf. He was also a pioneer of California Syrah in a distinctly northern Rhône style, typically showing notes of dark fruits, black pepper and gunflint.

91 Points | International Wine Cellar , May/June 2007

($40; a 70/30 blend of cabernet franc and merlot) Moderately saturated dark red. Complex, subtle aromas of black raspberry, redcurrant, mocha, brown spices, tobacco, smoke and earth. A step up in definition from the merlot bottlings, with good underlying minerality and spice character contributing brightness and energy. Firm, balanced wine with very good lift. Finishes with building, slightly dry tannins.

I loved it the first few times, then I let it breathe in a decanter for almost two hours. Richer, more mature, full in the mouth. Fantastic!
At this price, this wine is a bargain

Very rounded wine, true Bordeaux-like, smooth but with plenty of character

Powerful consumer interest in California wine is driven by two major factors. The more obvious reason is that California's best wines, which come from grapes grown in...

Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc is one of the three principal varieties in Bordeaux, as well as being the dominant variety in the fine wines of the western Loire Valley. In Bordeaux's Left Bank, Cabernet Franc serves as a blending component adding aromatic complexity to the more muscular Cabernet Sauvignon. On the Right Bank, the grape is found in the clay soils of St. Emilion, where it...
