($56) Deep ruby. Brooding, imploded nose features dark fruits with inky notes of licorice root, espresso, soy and tobacco. Seriously structured, chewy wine, packed with dense, sweet cherry and dark berry fruit and mineral tones. Finishes on a deep note of cherry liqueur, the firm, broad tannins adding to the impression of power. Very impressive.

Very closed wine at first
03/03/2006

I served this wine recently at a wine tasting that I taught over the course of two days. Having poured it the first night, I must say that I found it very closed and a little disappointing. However, going back to it the second night, the wine showed its potential. It is big, filled with jammy black fruit, chocolate, and coffee aromas. On the palate it is full and powerful. All that being said, it did not quite feel like the wine was in harmony. The tannins were not yet well integrated in the wine. This would likely improve with more time in the bottle, but in my opinion, the wine is at least 5 years away being ready to drink. But in the horridly hot summer of '03, it must have been exceptionally difficult to make a wine that would be accessible right away. I am interested to see what it tastes like with more time in the bottle.
