($53; all 13 Alsace varieties are planted here) Piquant aromas of grapefruit peel, mint and medicinal herbs. Densely packed but tightly coiled, with penetrating, sharply delineated flavors of pineapple, lemon, crushed stone, menthol and spices. Displays a distinctly cool character. Finishes long and dusty, with a repeating medicinal quality. This will need patience. From "austere" dark marne and clay soil deposited just before the last ice age, says Deiss, who considers this his longest-aging wine along with the Schoenenbourg.
