About Chateau Guiraud

This chateau, recently purchased by a consortium led by auto magnate Robert Peugeot, produces a distinctly restrained style of Sauternes that emphasizes the pungent, firmer quality of Sauvignon Blanc over the more exotic tones of Sémillon.

($76-$87) Full golden-yellow. Orange oil, clove, ginger, mint and minerals on the perfumed, vibrant noise. Superrich but juicy and vibrant, with an exotic hint to the fresh apricot and peach flavors. This boasts an exhilarating sugar/acid balance and finishes with terrific life and grip. Lafaurie-Peyraguey.

Pear, peach, nuts, honey, and toast. Almost has a mineral or stone taste. Good botrytis and lively sugar. Nice acid level. A long finish.

Rather more acid, less smooth, than one would expect from this noted maker
