About Havens Wine Cellars

Prior to selling his winery, Michael Havens made Merlot in a distinctly Bordeaux style, with a restrained sweetness and notes of lead pencil, minerals, game and tobacco leaf. He was also a pioneer of California Syrah in a distinctly northern Rhône style, typically showing notes of dark fruits, black pepper and gunflint.

($50; a 50/50 blend of cabernet sauvignon and syrah) Good ruby-red color. Black and blue fruit aromas complicated by minerals, licorice and black pepper. Sweet, aromatic and tightly wound, with impressive inner-palate energy for the vintage. The blackberry and floral flavors are still a bit youthfully tough, and the wine's tight tannins call for patience.

Napa Valley is the most famous wine-growing area in the U.S. It begins at the base of Mount St. Helena in the north and tapers off some 30 miles to the south into the floodplain where the Napa River enters San Francisco Bay. From Mount St. Helena to the city of Napa, the valley is defined by two north-south ridgelines of the Coast Range Mountains.
