($46) Light yellow with a steady bead. Pungent, leesy, mineral-dominated citrus and pear aromas, with a light hint of green peppercorn. Firm, taut citrus zest flavors are youthful and reticent, even with aeration. Patience reveals blood orange and cherry pit nuances, along with an almost strident talc underpinning. There's good weight here but I'll bet that the dry, stony qualities will shock tender palates. This takes the driest-Champagne-of-the-year honors, and must be the most firm and steely wine I've had in a very long time. I'd love to have this with some tiny cold water oysters but I'm afraid that my teeth would shatter. (Sussex Wine Merchants, Moorestown, NJ)

The Bereche family emigrated from Hungary in the early part of the nineteenth century. In 1847 they purchased this 10 hectare estate in Craon de Ludes, a village that now enjoys premier cru status.
Located on the Montaigne de Reims, Raphael Bereche farms his chalk-rich vineyards using lutte raisonnée, or minimal intervention, and achieves ripeness uncharacteristic of Ludes.
Integral to the family style is the systematic suppression of malolactic fermentation, a method that allows the Extra Brut Reserve to retain its supple, primary fruit while showcasing the minerality and nervy acidity of Ludes.
Excellent sparkling wine for raw oysters.
