More About This Wine
About Elio Grasso
Rather than turning out powerful, unyielding wines from his beautiful estate in the hills behind Monforte, Elio Grasso strives for harmonious and balanced bottlings. Grasso and his family offer three complex single-vineyard Barolosr. The Vigna Chiniera and the Case Maté are made in a more traditional style, while the powerful Runcot is aged for 30 months in all new barriques. Also look for their Nebbiolo from the Langhe and the Dolcetto d'Alba.

($75) Good medium red. Musky, minerally aromas of cherry, plum, nuts and spices. Supple on entry, with moderately dense red fruit flavors complicated by earth, brown spices and a leathery nuance. The sweet finishing fruit is somewhat shortened by dusty tannins. Offers bright acidity (the minerally soil features sand and limestone) but not the perfume of the best vintages. There was no Runcot in 2005 due to a hailstorm that affected this portion of the Gavarini vineyard on August 20.
