About Havens Wine Cellars

Prior to selling his winery, Michael Havens made Merlot in a distinctly Bordeaux style, with a restrained sweetness and notes of lead pencil, minerals, game and tobacco leaf. He was also a pioneer of California Syrah in a distinctly northern Rhône style, typically showing notes of dark fruits, black pepper and gunflint.

Expert Reviews

90-93 Points | International Wine Cellar , May/June 2007

(a blend of 62% syrah and 38% cabernet sauvignon) Ruby-red. Reduced, rather stunted nose. Then lush and sweet in the mouth, distinctly thicker and fuller than the two syrah bottlings but with sound acidity to frame the blackberry, licorice and leather flavors. Finishes with substantial tongue-dusting tannins. Havens describes the cabernet from his vineyard around the winery in Yountville as foursquare and earthy.

From Mount St. Helena to the city of Napa, the valley is defined by two north-south ridgelines of the Coast Range Mountains.
