About Laurel Glen Vineyard

The precious 3-acre parcel that gave birth to Laurel Glen Vineyard was first planted by German immigrants back in 1880. But it was Patrick Campbell who rediscovered the plot in 1974 and set to work expanding the vineyard to its current size of 16 acres.

($30) Deep ruby color. Spicy blackberry and cherry on the nose, with suave spice and floral qualities adding complexity. Clean, sharply focused red and dark berry flavors offer very good energy and silky texture, picking up a refreshingly bitter licorice quality with air. Leaves strong cassis and floral pastille flavors behind, along with zesty minerals. Quite elegantly styled.

I've learned that Wine Access wines need more air than I had been used to, but with a little more air, they are solid wines and worth the wait. This wine was no exception. My only small complaint is the high level of alcohol, but most of my friends consider these "value" wines.
Bordeaux-like finesse in a California Cab

If I hadn't seen the label, I would have thought I was drinking a Bordeaux from the left bank. Medium ruby in color, with a nose of sweet red fruit and minerals. Tannins were completely smoothed out letting the wine open into a mildly perfumed, velvety smooth treat. Notes of strawberry, mint, eucalyptus, and flint on the palate with just a touch of leather. Finish was smooth and long, and marked by minerals and earth. Refined, complex and elegant rather than forward and powerful, this wine will really appeal to Bordeaux lovers.
