About Etude Wines
Tony Soter, who now makes excellent Pinot Noir in Oregon under his Soter Vineyards label, laid the groundwork at Etude before selling it to the Beringer-Blass conglomerate. Current winemaker, Jon Priest, continues to make velvety, suave, immediately enjoyable Pinots that are characterized by red fruits, spices, forest floor scents and particularly fine-grained tannins.

($85) Good bright ruby. Ripe black fruits, mocha and chocolatey oak on the nose; showed a slightly medicinal note of chocolate/cherry liqueur with aeration. Very ripe and creamy in the middle in the character of so many 2005s, with a strong chocolate note and a slightly exotic, roasted quality. This full, dense cabernet finishes with broad, fine-grained tannins and sound acids but turned a bit chunky with air. (A second bottle, which I rated two points lower, showed a light raisiny note and some dryness on the finish.)
