About Martinelli Vineyards

Martinelli Winery is truly a creation born out of love. Founders Giuseppe and Luisa Martinelli eloped from their native Tuscany in 1895, with little more than their knowledge of winemaking, and set out to make a life in the new world. Over a century later, we can safely say that they succeeded.

($75) Ruby-red. Intensely floral on the nose, with bright raspberry and blueberry aromas supported by zesty minerality and complemented by fresh rose and lavender. Incredibly deep dark berry flavors are complemented by candied licorice and floral pastille tones. This is beyond rich and sweet but there's an almost eerie elegance about it. The vines here were planted in 1877. Turley says that the wild yeasts here will allow the wine to ferment to dryness with up to 18% alcohol (this one clocks in at 17.1%). "That's what 130-year-old yeast can do, I guess."

My wife and I tried this at a wonderful Todd English restaurant called Olives located in Bellagio Las Vegas. It was recommended by the sommelier and we could not have fallen more in love with a wine. It was deep purple or plumlike in color. Though high in alchohol content at around 17% this did not come across in the nose. Large scents of blueberries, blackberries, pepper, and figs made me anticipate the tasting with excitement. This wine is very full bodied and finishes dry with hints of fruit and pepper. It is a big wine with lots of flavor and really took us on a journey with each taste. It was indulgent in many ways.

About California

It is remarkable that an industry essentially less than a half-century old could capture the attention of the American wine-buying public to the degree that California has. Powerful consumer interest in California wine is driven by two major factors. The more obvious reason is that California's best wines, which come from grapes grown in...

Zinfandel

Zinfandel is not the rage it was in the 1980s and early 1990s, as there are now too many wines made from overripe fruit or from young vines, or overwhelmed by excessive use of new barrels. Today's Zin styles range from elegant, taut, and claret-like midweights to superripe and potty behemoths, with off-the-charts...
