About Havens Wine Cellars
Prior to selling his winery, Michael Havens made Merlot in a distinctly Bordeaux style, with a restrained sweetness and notes of lead pencil, minerals, game and tobacco leaf. He was also a pioneer of California Syrah in a distinctly northern Rhône style, typically showing notes of dark fruits, black pepper and gunflint.

($24; vinified in stainless steel, then aged partly in neutral oak uprights; no malolactic fermentation or lees stirring) Bright green-gold color. Pungent green apple, lime, peach and spearmint on the nose. Juicy, spicy flavors of pineapple and citrus fruits framed by strong acidity. Could use more pliancy and nuance, though, and finishes a bit hard-edged. Best on the nose today. Needs to be served with food.
