About Etude Wines

Tony Soter, who now makes excellent Pinot Noir in Oregon under his Soter Vineyards label, laid the groundwork at Etude before selling it to the Beringer-Blass conglomerate. ($42) Bright, deep red. Subtly complex aromas of bitter cherry, sandalwood, dried rose, spices and pepper. Juicy but not particularly fleshy, in the style of the year. A lively, very fresh style, a bit lean for this bottling but an ideal restaurant pinot. This gained in richness as it opened in the glass.

Lavender-like perfume soars over a "viola" base. Flavor similar, excellent. Best served at RT (72°F). Tasted July 2009.

The skins are especially delicate, which accounts for the lighter color and body of finished wine. But, despite the delicacy, the best wines have excellent backbone and...
