91 Points | International Wine Cellar , January/February 2008

($27) Bright medium ruby. Superripe aromas of raspberry, dark cherry, leather, licorice, chocolate and graphite, all lifted by a violet topnote. Lush, ripe and minerally, with a suave, fine-grained texture to the raspberry and floral flavors. Brisk but harmonious acids leaven the almost liqueur-like impression of sweetness. Finishes long, with lovely texture and snap. A terrific value. (Unfortunately, both of my samples of the 2006 J. Alberto malbec, though rich and liqueur-like, showed a slightly stewy, pruney character, and struck me as distinctly over the top.)

Malbec

The Malbec grape may have originated in southwest France, where it still is grown under the name Cot. However, the grape's international profile has surged not because of what's going on in France, but rather because of current trends in Argentina.
