2006 Elio Altare Dolcetto d'Alba

In the split between the modern and the traditional in Piedmont, Elio Altare lands resoundlingly on the modern side. His densely packed Barolos get short, gentle fermentations and are raised in small French barrels. These densely packed wines boast almost Burgundian lushness of texture and sweet fruit. Although rarely austere in their youth, they also have a track record for improving in bottle. Altare makes deeply colored, focused Barbera and Dolcetto with compelling sweetness and pliancy. The oak-aged Barbera Larigi is quite ageworthy.
