($20; aged 12 months in French oak, 40% new) Pale yellow. Subdued but pure nose offers peach, apricot, brown spices and almond. Gently spicy and bright, with a light touch and noteworthy grip to the concentrated nectarine flavor. Rich but dry, with a minerally reserve. (Incidentally, the talented Adi Badenhorst has gone off to establish his own label, while his long-time assistant Randolph Christians has taken over winemaking responsibilities at Rustenberg.)

Rustenberg 2007 chardonnay

closed on the nose. driven by white flowers, white peach, and minerality. Palate is mineral driven with a bit of weight, but not much fruit and a lacing of oak on the finish. It comes across as enjoyable, but not special, with the minerality lacking acidity to give it the intensity of a good chablis, but lacking the fruit or the nuttiness and richness of a good burg. I was less impressed than Steve and would give this an 85 - 86. Good, enjoyable, but nothing special either for the old world or the new.

About South Africa

During the era of apartheid, trade sanctions imposed on imports from South Africa kept these wines out of the U.S. and many other markets, with the effect that local South African winemakers had little incentive to produce wines that could compete in a global setting...

Chardonnay

The best Chardonnays in the world continue to arrive from the region where the grape first emerged: the chalk, clay, and limestone vineyards of Burgundy and Chablis. While the origins of the grape were disputed for many years, with some speculating that the grape came all the way from the Middle East, DNA researchers at the University of California-Davis proved in 1999 that Chardonnay actually developed...
