91 Points | Stephen Tanzer's IWC - January/February 2009

($83) Ruby-red. A bit introverted today, displaying powerful dark fruit and chocolate qualities on the nose. Plump and ripe, with deep kirsch and plum flavors and a refreshing jolt of cracked pepper. The fully resolved tannins add subtle back-end grip without distracting from the fruit. Gains freshness with air and finishes with excellent clarity and persistence. Awfully young but this wine's depth and power are impressive. Fans of richer syrah may score this even higher than I do today.

In the vineyard, Syrah is largely cooperative- vines are productive, but not overly vigorous. Skins are thick, helping the grape...
