($13) Deep ruby-red. Slightly exotic aromas of black raspberry, licorice and Christmas cake; this reminded me of a zinfandel from the early '90s. Then superripe and fat with fruit, with a touch of reduction to its varietally typical flavors of dark berries, graphite, leather and licorice. Finishes with a note of licorice pastille and substantial ripe tannins. A very good value. (Michael Skurnik Wines, Syosset, NY)

Argentina's "Star Grape" - Malbec
08/28/2008
by Genie B.
What a gorgeous color - vivid purple. Aromas of licorice, blackberry. Medium dry. The texture is as smooth as velvet. Drinks juicy. Try a bottle with a nice piece of london broil or peppersteak.

But with per-capita consumption in the domestic market in sharp decline since the mid-1970s, Argentina's wine producers realized that they had to look to export markets to remain in business, and winemaking in Argentina began its transformation.

Malbec

The Malbec grape may have originated in southwest France, where it still is grown under the name Cot. However, the grape's international profile has surged not because of what's going on in France, but rather because of current trends in Argentina.
