Head as far north in northeast Italy as you can, just before you cross the Austrian border. Here you'll hit the Valle Isarco, the northernmost winegrowing region in Italy. One of the oldest properties in the valley is the Abbazia di  Novacella. This abbey has been around for centuries, and its wines have always been famous. Now, it's a great source for vibrant, well-made aromatic white varieties -- the indigenous ones are best. There's also a very good Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir).
