Founded in 1973 by Tom Dehlinger, a UC Davis graduate, Dehlinger Winery has a rep for quality not quantity. Production here has topped out at about 7,000 cases per vintage, a figure that has risen steadily since the initial 14 acres were planted in 1975.

($45) Vivid red. Pungent, expressive aromas of blackberry, pepper, rose and spices. Round and silky, with a firm mineral spine shaping the dark berry and spicecake flavors. Offers very good depth and sweetness, and finishes with strong cut and spicy persistence.
