About Kistler Vineyards
Steve Kistler's rich, Burgundy-style Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, from a series of ideally situated vineyards all around Sonoma County, have long been favorites among collectors and restaurant clients. The best bottlings have proven to be excellent mid-term agers and are among the richest and most complex Chardonnays made anywhere—the key is low-tech, hands-off winemaking that makes the most of the particular vineyard site plus what each vintage has to offer.

($120) Ruby-red. Earthy, mineral-driven bouquet reminded me of a Graves wine, with cherry and dark berry aromas complicated by fresh blood, smoked meat and dried rose. Deep, spicy flavors of sweet cherry and blackberry are given shape and grip by dusty tannins. Really intriguing wine, with serious depth and structure. This is utterly singular pinot noir, but I'm not sure I would have guessed the variety. This vineyard sits on a ridge right by the ocean. (JR)
