89 Points | International Wine Cellar , September/October 2009

($40) Good full red. Complex nose melds dark cherry, underbrush, brown spices, licorice and flowers. Densely packed but rather light on its feet, with a sappy quality to its flavors of spicy red berries, cherry, minerals, smoke and rooty underbrush. Finishes with a broad dusting of tannins and good subtle building length. In a less fruity style than this producer's pinots from Central Otago. Note that this wine and the Bannockburn Sluicings were markedly better than samples I reported on in Issue 140-hence the new tasting notes. (Kobrand, Inc., New York, NY)

Pinot Noir

Adored by critics, prized by collectors, Pinot Noir is one of most tantalizing yet temperamental varietals in the world. For many wine enthusiasts, this is part of the appeal of Pinot -- it doesn't reveal its charms easily. Pinot Noir's virtue also stems from the unique characteristics of the grape. The skins are especially delicate, which accounts for the lighter color and body of finished wine. But, despite the delicacy, the best wines have excellent backbone and...
