2007 Avignonesi Rosso di Montepulciano

While most Montepulciano producers focus their attention on the Vino Nobile-- mainly Sangiovese blended with a number of other varieties -- the highlights from Avononesi are the estate's decadently rich, unctuous and extremely expensive Vin Santo and Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice. These both number among Italy's finest sweet wines. The former is a blend of Trebbiano, Grechetto and Malvasia, while the latter is 100% Sangiovese. The Nobile is solid and consistent, if not extraordinary.
