($56) Vivid red. Seductive, gaudy nose displays compelling aromas of spicy red and dark berry preserves, patchouli, rose and incense. Sappy raspberry and blackberry flavors are firmed by dusty tannins and gain sweetness with air. Finishes juicy, sweet and long, with a suave floral nuance lingering. I can still smell this wine.

Subtle Powerhouse Pinot!
05/05/2011
by Pizarro14005221
Out of all the small vineyards that Adam Tolmach wrings Pinot Noirs from, I think Fe Ciega is my favorite. As with all of them, this is a carefully crafted masterpiece evident with each sip. At pop, this one is going to need around 60 minutes to breathe; initially alcohol is very prominent (Melissa thought medicinal), but remember this pinot has been napping for a number of years now – give it time to wake. Afterwards, time has paid off. It has a wonderful bouquet of gentle black cherry and blackberry, some organic earthiness, and a little shack-cured tobacco or stirrings of tea (as it progressed). Body was full, ruby coloration all the way to the meniscus. Very balanced, black cherry, some wet earth and very mild white oak. The finish was short on baked black cherry, yet long of mild, tart tannins; a little sage and black tea wafts across mid-palate at the end. Cherry transitioned from black to red as this one breathed, slightly brighter too. Overall, a perfect integration of fruit, alcohol, and tannins, subtle Old World execution, not a full on fruit bash like some California pinot. If you like crafted pinots, this is your bottle. 92

starts off a little closed and then opens up into the perfect combination f fruit, silky tannins and just enough acidity. Love the fact it is not super alcoholic. I am buying more.

About California

It is remarkable that an industry essentially less than a half-century old could capture the attention of the American wine-buying public to the degree that California has. Powerful consumer interest in California wine is driven by two major factors. The more obvious reason is that California's best wines, which come from grapes grown in...

Pinot Noir

Adored by critics, prized by collectors, Pinot Noir is one of most tantalizing yet temperamental varietals in the world. For many wine enthusiasts, this is part of the appeal of Pinot -- it doesn't reveal its charms easily. Pinot Noir's virtue also stems from the unique characteristics of the grape. The skins are especially delicate, which accounts for the lighter color and body of finished wine. But, despite the delicacy, the best wines have excellent backbone and...
