($165) Opaque purple. Blackberry, cassis and cherry aromas are complemented by anise, violet and bitter chocolate. Juicy, intensely flavored and quite fresh, with a less exotic character than the La Cueva bottling. Youthfully taut Rioja with a firm tannin/acid spine supporting its potent dark berry and mineral flavors. Finishes with good grip and a strong, dusty mineral quality that hangs on tenaciously. This needs time. (Fine Estates from Spain, Dedham, MA)
