($35) Bright medium ruby. Captivating perfume of blackberry, violet pastille, licorice and black pepper; offers more lift on the nose the Neyers cabernets. In a distinctly juicy style and less exotic than the same wine in 2006, with ripe acids framing the lively flavors of dark berries, violet, licorice, black olive and lavender. Finishes with firm tannins and lovely aromatic lift. A fruit bomb with a distinctly Northern Rhone perfume.

This like the Neyers Chardonnays is a fairly priced. It has lots of new world fruit but takes you closer to a Cote Rotie than might expect. The big Aussie wines can get a bit tiring but this strikes a nice balance.

Powerful consumer interest in California wine is driven by two major factors. The more obvious reason is that California's best wines, which come from grapes grown in...

Syrah

While the grape is currently grown throughout the world, the most elegant Syrahs still come from the Northern Rhone valley, particularly the appellations of Côte Rôtie, Cornas, and Hermitage. Here, steep, terraced vineyards help produce full-bodied, intense, tannic wines loaded with white pepper and red fruit. In the vineyard, Syrah is largely cooperative- vines are productive, but not overly vigorous. Skins are thick, helping the grape...
