Ravenswood Winery has humble origins, beginning in 1976. This was the year Joel Peterson harvested his first crop of Zinfandel. Not from his own vines, however, Joel consistently sourced grapes from vineyards in Sonoma County and Napa Valley. At first it wasn’t by choice, he simply couldn’t afford to buy land. ($25) Bright yellow-gold. Seductively perfumed aromas of lemon curd, orange, poached pear, lees and sweet butter. Fleshy and smooth in texture, with deep orchard fruit and toasted hazelnut flavors. Bitter lemon zest and pear skin qualities lend a dry impression to the smoky finish. Pretty interesting, and ready to drink. This wine is based heavily on the Wente clone.
