($30) Inky ruby. Ripe, smoky aromas of blackberry and boysenberry preserves and cherry pie, with complicating notes of licorice and dark chocolate. Broad and jammy on the palate, offering sweet dark berry flavors and a slow-building cocoa quality. Distinctly rich but in no way ungainly; in fact, this is surprisingly lively for its volume. Finishes supple and sweet, with a repeating licorice note and smoky mineral and spice qualities. This year's version is more energetic than the 2006.
