About Beckmen Vineyards

When winemaker Steve Beckmen returned from Italy in 1997, he was convinced that his family's recently purchased hillside in Santa Barbara County would be perfect for growing Rhône varietals. ($48) Opaque purple. Cherry-vanilla, blackberry, Indian spices and violet on the nose. Classic syrah in aromas and flavors, offering sweet dark berry, olive and candied violet notes and a wallop of sexy oak spices. The finish repeats the spicy notes and lingers with very good persistence.

Immediate olfactory explosion. This is a wine of gratification. Black fruit, soft tannins, a palate pleaser extraordinaire.

Syrah

While the grape is currently grown throughout the world, the most elegant Syrahs still come from the Northern Rhone valley, particularly the appellations of Côte Rôtie, Cornas, and Hermitage. Here, steep, terraced vineyards help produce full-bodied, intense, tannic wines loaded with white pepper and red fruit. In the vineyard, Syrah is largely cooperative- vines are productive, but not overly vigorous. Skins are thick, helping the grape...
