95 Points | International Wine Cellar , January/February 2011

($120; this represents Catena's best 12 malbec barrels) Deep, bright, saturated ruby. Vibrant blackberry and mineral aromas, plus an almost exotic note of caramel; very ripe but still a bit tight. Like liquid silk on entry, then staggeringly concentrated, sweet and utterly seamless in the middle. This explosive wine expands with aeration and finishes with utterly suave tannins and palate-staining length. A knockout of a malbec.

First "REAL" Wine ever.
01/14/2012

The last time I ever had wine was a little wine tasting in Napa Valley in 1990. The wine was okay but nothing I was immediately drawn too. I started listening to wine reviews on the radio one day explaining the point system rating for wines, and one day I went shopping and saw all these wines with the points listed on a card with a brief description of each. Almost all of them had a rating of 89 from the experts ;except one. I looked at the bottle carefully because this one stated 98. Now that had my attention immediately. I saw the price then the score then the price.WellI decided to take the plunge and buy this bootle of real wine.I was in such a rush to take it home that I forgot to get a cork screw wine bottle opener. So I took it to my local bar and they opened it for me and we smelled it, of course I wasn't allowed to drink it then until I got home. Well I finally made it home and tried this real bottle of wine. Well 10 days later I consumed all the contents of the wine. I was amazed at the taste bursting with flavor and deep fruits, the color was a dark almost purple. The wine had no bitter after taste at all. This Argentne wine was so great that I will be wanting it for life atleast one bottle a month and savor this wine with 3 or 4 ounces a day or less if possible. This was a very stunning experience to me and I hope a renewed one once a month tradition

About Argentina

Until the early 1990s, Argentina's wine industry was focused inward, as the local market's thirst was sufficient to absorb the huge quantities of everyday drinking wine produced there. But with per-capita consumption in the domestic market in sharp decline since the mid-1970s, Argentina's wine producers realized that they had to look to export markets to remain in business, and winemaking in Argentina began its transformation.

Malbec

The Malbec grape may have originated in southwest France, where it still is grown under the name Cot. However, the grape's international profile has surged not because of what's going on in France, but rather because of current trends in Argentina.
