About Beckmen Vineyards

When winemaker Steve Beckmen returned from Italy in 1997, he was convinced that his family's recently purchased hillside in Santa Barbara County would be perfect for growing Rhône varietals. His father Tom was skeptical, but since then, Purisima Mountain Vineyard has established itself as one of the finest sources of Syrah and Grenache in the Central Coast.

($48; 15.5% alcohol) Ruby-red. Spicy red and dark berries on the nose, with notes of rose and mace adding complexity. Juicy and gently sweet, offering lush raspberry and blackberry flavors and showing no rough edges. A weighty, creamy grenache with strong finishing spiciness and a lingering note of mocha.

This wine is still tight. It's a huge wine with a ton of flavors, improves with air. I keep going back to it but my advice is to give it another 3 years in the cellar. It's like most of the great 2007 CDPs - not ready for prime time and in need of cellaring.

About California

Powerful consumer interest in California wine is driven by two major factors. The more obvious reason is that California's best wines, which come from grapes grown in...

Grenache (aka Garnacha)

One of the more versatile red grapes in the world, Grenache thrives in southern France and Spain (where it is known as Garnacha). Ranging in style from light and fruity to deep, brooding and intense; the grape also suits a variety of ambitions: Grenache can be used in inexpensive wines that offer immediate satisfaction, but it is also successful...
