92 Points | International Wine Cellar , March/April 2009

(70% roussanne, 11% grenache blanc, 9% viognier, 5% sauvignon blanc and 5% chenin blanc) Fairly pale yellow. Bracing, pure aromas of lemon, orange, peach, marzipan, honey, crushed stone and spring flowers. Sappy and fresh, with very ripe but dry stone fruit, mineral and floral flavors given an urgent quality by strong acidity. Rich and tactile wine, finishing with an almost tannic phenolic edge but also terrific lift. Very Old World in style, but I would still drink this young for its fruit.

Steve's review nails it. This is a delicious rhone style white driven by rich, luscious, white fruit, a touch of citrus, very full and round in the month. Sweet from ripeness not sugar. Just a delight to drink. Steve argues for drinking it young for its fruit. I think it will be big, rich, and beautiful with age. A solid 92 point wine that could evolve into something grander.

During the era of apartheid, trade sanctions imposed on imports from South Africa kept these wines out of the U.S. and many other markets, with the effect that local South African winemakers had little incentive to produce wines that could compete in a global setting...
